Board of Directors

The Board of Directors is responsible for setting the senior center policies and maintaining the best interest of the Senior Center and its members. They never receive any monetary compensation for their efforts. Their commitment to the Senior Center is due to their love and concern about our senior citizens in the community.

Meet our Directors


Barbara McCardellBarbara McCardell was raised on a farm in Wakefield and graduated from Solanco. I married Les 23 years ago. We have 4 adult children between us, and 5 grandchildren. Our one daughter lives in Milwaukee , one son in Delaware and the other daughter lives in Quarryville and son in Strasburg. I retired from Lancaster Lebanon IU 13. I was a para-professional for 32 years. I worked with learning and mentally challenged students. I also waitressed at Willow Valley for several years. I started visiting Seniors in Nursing Homes and in their homes after my Mother passed away, I then became a Deacon at a Church we were attending. I love people especially Seniors. God has blessed me by sending me to Wesley Church to be the Visitation Pastor. I love visiting the Seniors that are home bound and the ones that are in Nursing /Retirement Homes. I visit the ill in the hospitals and in their homes that attend Wesley and who ever needs a visit in the community. I have been blessed to be asked to be the Pastor at many Memorial services. I am on the Next Gen Services, Inc. Board. I love being involved with all who attend this center. They make me feel so loved when I am with them.

Summary of experience

  • Part time concultant to hotel and restaurant trade; also published monthly newsletter to camps and retreat centers.
  • Institutional food sales
  • Part of top management team for 16-unit restaurant chain. Involved in corporate organization, management development, training, advertising, new product development, accounting, budgets, and computerization of entire financial analysis, accounting and inventory.
  • Developed new programs in food procurement for wholesalers and chain restaurants.
  • Have worked with various companies in developing new menus and advertising concepts.
  • Former owner and operator of retail cheese and wine shops for 5 years.
  • Sales experience with wholesale paper company, selling to entire spectrum of the business community.
  • Formerly held Virginia real estate license
  • Taught part time at The Lewis Hotel School.
  • Was owner, with wife of a bed and breakfast outside Strasburg, Pa. For 14 years
  • Owner/President ASP Sales (promotional products- 2002 to present)
  • Food services consultant with Mennonite Disaster Services. Cooking for work crews at disaster sited. Teaching food service classes. Published cookbook, Recipes for 20 plus.
  • Started a non-profit organization in 2002 with wife. The Appalachian Book Project. We send children’s books to rural poor America. Currently expanding to include clothes, toys, etc to Native American Reservations.
  • Served on Board of Directors, Love in the Name of Christ from 2005 to 2008.


Bonnie MackrellBonnie MacKrell

I am a member of Mechanic’s Grove Church of the Brethren where I enjoy taking Art Classes and Women’s Fellowship. I have spent the last ten years in health care as a supervisor for a home care agency, a unit clerk and various other health care positions. Prior to that I dabbled in Real Estate for a few years, and before that I was a senior customer service agent and service assurance leader for Federal Express Air Freight where I enjoyed 16 years of employment.

These days I spend my time painting, gardening and attending Delaware County Community College. In addition to serving as Secretary on the board for Next Gen Services inc., I also volunteer at the Veterans Hospital in Perry Point, MD.

I am married to my childhood sweetheart for 27 years and have two grown daughters, Christina and Colleen. My youngest daughter Colleen just got married in May 2011 so I now have a son-in-law as well.

Karen Shenk has served seniors for 15 years at the Next Gen Senior Center. Working with her mother, Nancy Morrow, Director since 1983, the senior center is the hub from which programs and services help seniors maintain their dignity and independence. Currently she serves as President of their Board of Directors.

Karen is the President of Board of Directors of the Penn Manor Education Foundation, is a member of the Millersville Business Association, Lancaster Sertoma Club and serves on the “Women In Business” Committee with the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce.

As Agape Center Executive Director, her job is to discover ways in which local businesses can network with ministries, churches and non-profit organizations to serve the community. Karen presently serves as "Missions Director" for Transformation Ministries, traveling with missions teams to Nicaragua.



Joyce MillerJoyce Miller currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Next Gen Senior Center as their Vice President.

She is Agape Care Director of Community Services. Her job is to explore opportunities Agape Care can serve community organizations. Joyce brings years of experience serving organizations such as: The United Way, as a Fundraising Coordinator and “Day of Caring” project work. She served on the Fundraising Committee for the Mountville Youth Athletic Assoc. and as a “Team Mom” at the Mountville Elementary School. Joyce was also the Fundraising Committee Leader and a “Room Parent”. She currently volunteers at the Millersville Meals On Wheels and with Mum’s For Moms.


Richard "Rich" Staley is a 25 year resident of Quarryville. He formally lived in Philadelphia where he retired from Philadelphia Police Force. He has worked for Sun Ledger, Clean Enterprises and the Rainbow Dinner Theater. Rich’s other interests include music, writing, he loves books, model building and aviation and considers himself to be a real “History Buff”. Rich has three grown children, and three grandchildren. Rich says: “ I’m old enough to have experience in life---Young enough to put it to good use”.


Colleen Savoia currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Next Gen Senior Center as their Treasurer.

Colleen Savoia graduated from Delaware Technical and Community College with an AAS in Occupational Therapy. She has worked for 4 years as an Occupational Therapy Assistant and previously enjoyed occupations in the health and human services industry as a CNA and community living facilitator. She has worked with people of varying ages and backgrounds but finds working with seniors most rewarding personally. Colleen has been married for 2 years and together with her husband enjoys kayaking, going to the beach and entertaining family and friends.
